North Tapanuli's Tarutung Earthquake; BMKG Updates Magnitude and Aftershocks
7 October 2022 11:19 WIB
TEMPO.CO , Jakarta -The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) updated data on the latest earthquake that jolted Tarutung, North Tapanuli, North Sumatra, in the early hours of Friday, October 7, 2022. The agency stated that the quake, which could be felt up to an intensity scale of IV MMI, was measured at a magnitude of 4.8, instead of the earlier report at 5.0.
Daryono, the agency's acting head of the quake and tsunami center, said in a press release that it was centered on land in the Sipoholon area and at a depth of 10 kilometers.
"Based on the epicenter's location and its depth, it was a shallow quake triggered by active fault activity," he said. Previously, he tweeted that the latest incident was part of the series of the M5.8 quake that hit the region in the early hours of October 1.
Daryono thus called on residents to stay calm and not be influenced by baseless information. People are also advised to avoid damaged or cracked buildings following the quake.
After the earthquake early today, BMKG recorded an aftershock three hours later or at 06:15 western Indonesian time (WIB). Its epicenter was much shallower at one kilometer and fortunately, it was measured weak at 3.3 magnitudes. The shaking could be felt in Sipoholon and Tarutung at an intensity scale of II MMI.
